HOP Kits

HOP Kit

What are HOP Kits?

HOP Kits for genetic risk screening are small boxes that contain the saliva sample collection instructions and tools needed at no cost. HOP’s genetic screening panel includes 32 genes associated with inherited cancer syndromes, including HBOC and Lynch syndrome, which if positive can put individuals at a higher risk for cancer over the general population; about 5-10% of cancers have an inherited cause.

Each HOP kit comes with:

  • instructions
  • mouthwash
  • a tube to collect your saliva
  • a plastic bag to seal the tube
  • pre-paid mailer for you to return your sample.

Who can get a HOP Kit?

Any adult with an Oregon address can request to have a HOP Kit mailed directly to them at no cost.

Cancer survivors are welcome to join the HOP study! Enrollment is needed to fully understand the role of genetics and cancer risk to advance cancer prevention and treatment research.

Need Help? Email HealthyOregonProject@ohsu.edu

We expect to provide your results in about 6 months.

Results are available in the Healthy Oregon Project app with an email reminder sent to the email you used to sign up.

Negative results (no genetic risk variant found) are returned via the HOP app along with more information about your results. Positive results (genetic risk found) are returned at no cost by phone with an OHSU genetic counselor to explain the result and recommended next steps to mitigate your risk. After speaking with you, the genetic counselor will also mail you a summary letter along with a copy of your results report. Our HOP participant resource navigator will also check in with you following a positive result to make sure you have all of the information and resources you need.

HOP’s inherited genetic screening is meant for the general population to find the simplest variants and will not detect approximately 10% of the inherited cancer genes analyzed in clinical genetic testing. HOP encourages participants with a personal or family history to follow provider recommendations for genetic testing as per medical guidelines.

HOP Kits are important and so are HOP Surveys! When you download the Healthy Oregon Project app you will see a few short surveys that we hope you will complete. Surveys help us to understand the connection between genetics, lifestyle, and environment in cancer and chronic disease risk. More surveys will become available over time and HOP will alert you to them through the app and email newsletter.
